About the Event

Dr. Mallika Sarabhai will be personally conducting workshops at focusing on Bharatnatyam – one of the most ancient dance forms of India.

The workshops will be focusing on three different aspects of the dance form.

1. ‘Nritta’ – Movement is a technical performance where the dancer presents pure Bharata Natyam movements emphasizing on speed, form, pattern, range and rhythmic aspects without any form of enactment or interpretive aspect.

2. In ‘Nritya’ the dancer communicates a story, spiritual themes, message or feelings through expressive gestures and slower body movements harmonized with musical notes. Dr. Sarabhai will focus on Bhava – communicating emotions through dance

3. ‘Natyam’ where the dancer maintains certain body movements for certain characters of the play which is communicated through dance-acting. Dr. Sarabhai will be focusing on the Interpretation of text of the play and character for this class.

Nayikas, from Ashta-Nayika, a collective name for eight types of nayikas, or heroines, classified by Bharata in his Sanskrit treatise on performing arts Natya Shastra.
